🏄‍♂️ Mawi Beach Through My Eyes – A Local Surfer’s Spot You’ll Never Forget
Hey there! I’m a local surfer from Lombok, and if there’s one wave that always keeps me coming back, it’s Mawi. This beach is raw, powerful, and beautiful—and it’s got a special place in my heart.
Most tourists know Selong Belanak. It’s perfect for beginners, soft sand, small waves. But if you’re looking for a challenge, something with more punch, let me introduce you to Mawi Beach.
🛵 Getting to Mawi – The Journey’s Part of the Fun
Mawi is about 30–40 minutes from Kuta by motorbike. The road gets a little bumpy near the end, but that’s normal. As a local, I’ve ridden that route more times than I can count, and I still enjoy the ride. It’s quiet, green, and peaceful—you’ll pass hills, buffalo, and sometimes even kids flying kites.
If you’re visiting, rent a proper scooter with good tires. Or better yet, come with a local guide who knows the way and the wave.
🌊 The Wave – Not for Beginners, But Super Rewarding
Let’s be honest—Mawi’s wave is powerful. It breaks over a reef, and it’s not super forgiving if you’re still learning how to pop up. But if you’re an intermediate or advanced surfer, you’ll love the lefts here. On the right swell, it barrels clean and fast. On small days, it’s fun and playful. On big days—well, be ready.
I usually surf here in the dry season when the swell lines up. Mawi works best at mid to high tide. Just keep an eye on the conditions, and always respect the ocean. It changes fast.
🤝 The Vibe – Simple, Real, and Friendly
What I love most about Mawi is the peaceful, raw feeling. There aren’t crowds like you’ll find in Bali. Just a few local warungs selling mie goreng, coconuts, and cold drinks. Sometimes I come here just to sit, watch the sets, and chat with other surfers.
The vibe is chill. You’ll meet people from around the world—but also locals like me who grew up with these waves.
🌅 Sunset at Mawi – Magic Every Time
If you have time, stay until the sun goes down. The way the light hits the cliffs, the ocean turns gold—it’s honestly one of the best sunset spots in South Lombok. And after a good session, sitting there tired, salty, and satisfied… there’s nothing like it.
👣 Local Tips from Me to You
- 🕒 Surf early morning or late afternoon—less wind, better waves
- đź©´ Bring reef booties if you’re not used to walking on rocks
- 💧 Bring extra water and some snacks—no big shops out here
- 📱 No signal in some spots—disconnect and enjoy!
As a local, I always feel proud when visitors fall in love with Lombok’s waves. But I’ll tell you straight—Mawi is not a beginner beach. Come with respect, come prepared, and Mawi will give you some of the best rides of your life.
If you’re around Kuta and want to surf Mawi together or need a local guide, just let me know. I’m always happy to share the stoke!
